2010 NURSE EXTERN PROGRAM

Pursuing your nursing career within St. John Health System?
Then we have the opportunity for you!
The Nurse Extern Program is a 9-week program in which you are given the opportunity to further develop your knowledge and skills while working directly with an RN mentor on an assigned clinical unit. The program involves not only direct patient care, but also includes off-unit experiences, networking and mentoring.
What makes the SJHS Nurse Extern Program different? The focus of our program is on your growth and development, not on our staffing needs. To accomplish this we have included several unique features in our program. Nurse Externs:
- Are not part of the staffing matrix.
- Meet on a regular basis with program coordinators and fellow externs in class sessions run by experienced Nurse Educators & Education Specialists from within St. John Health System.
- Participate in facilitated observations in an area of interest. Examples: ER, ICU, OR, CRNA, Nurse Practitioner, Home Care, and Hospice.
- Complete a unit-based clinical improvement project.
- Have the opportunity to apply for nursing scholarships.
- Transition to Nurse Technician positions as long as all program and performance expectations have been met.
- Receive preferred consideration for available GN/RN positions upon graduation provided all expectations continue to be met.
You must meet the following minimum criteria to apply for the program:
- Currently enrolled in a nursing program leading to a degree that qualifies you for licensure as a Registered Nurse
- Entering final year of nursing school and sincerely interested in pursuing your professional nursing career within SJHS (graduation anticipated by June, 2011)
- Cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.25
Opportunities are available at St. John Hospital and Medical Ctr (Detroit),
St. John Macomb-Oakland, Macomb Ctr (Warren) and Oakland Ctr (Madison Heights),
Providence Hospital (Southfield) and Providence Park Hospital (Novi).
