Van Elslander Pavilion made possible through generosity of many key donors
Over the past several months, St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) has opened 144 private patient rooms in the Van Elslander Pavilion. The four new floors, each with 36 private patients rooms, has been possible through the generosity of key donors, and is part of the $30 million capital campaign for SJH&MC.
Rooms have been designed with families in mind, and include beautiful furniture and fixtures, private bathrooms and sofas, and a flat-screen television. The privacy of the rooms is enhanced by sound absorbing materials that help maintain a quiet and peaceful environment.
Additionally, the floors have welcoming family waiting rooms, physicians team conference rooms, architecture to support SJH&MC’s migration to computerized charting, and custom nurse work spaces that keeps the caregivers close to the patients.
Floors have been arranged as follows:
The Fourth Floor, in honor of Sister Verenice McQuade, cares for cardiac patients. Photos and more info
The Fifth Floor, in honor of Mickey and Sharon Burke, made possible by Gretchen Valade, which cares for cardiac patients. Photos and more info
The Sixth Floor, in honor of Anthony L. Soave and family, cares for oncology patients. Photos and more info
The Seventh Floor cares for orthopedic surgical patients, spinal surgical patients and neurosurgery patients. Photos and more info
The most recent floor, 7 North, which opened in June, takes amenities to a new level, with a Rehabilitation Services Satellite room and the Body Spa program for patients undergoing orthopedic, spinal, or neurosurgery procedure. The space has an open treatment area for group and individual exercise, gait training, stair training, and patient education. All patients receive a special outfit to wear during their stay, instead of a hospital gown. Additionally, patients on the floor can choose to receive free massages, manicures and hair styling, and also receive a gourmet meal for themselves and a guest during their recuperation.
In addition to the private patient rooms, many of the other floors within SJH&MC have been undergoing renovation, and conversion to many more private rooms available within the hospital. By the end of July, most of the private rooms in these areas will be in service, making nearly 60 percent of the med/surg beds private.
These positive changes to the healing environment at SJH&MC will allow us to better care for patients, and give them an enhanced patient experience.
