Back and neck pain can be a common problem. You can strain back muscles by lifting too much weight or just by moving the wrong way. For pain that won't go away, or gets worse instead of better, St. John Health offers specialists who can help including physical therapists, massage therapists, physicians and pain management experts.
Belts for the Back
Many workers who need to lift heavy objects on the job wear back belts -- also called back supports or abdominal belts. But the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) does not recommend using a back belt to prevent injuries, because studies have not confirmed that these belts do, in fact, work. Instead of relying on a back belt to prevent injury, NIOSH says, workers should learn proper techniques for safe lifting.
