Cardiac Research

The members of the St. John Health Cardiovascular (SJH-CV) Network are pleased to present this overview of research activities occurring between 2005 and 2007.

The St. John Health Cardiovascular (SJH-CV) Network

The SJH-CV Network is a consortium of nationally recognized, tertiary care cardiovascular hospitals located within Southeastern Michigan including St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Providence Hospital and St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital. Each of the members of this network have recently been designated as Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiac Centers of Excellence. Our state-of-the-art facilities were developed to complement the compassionate, expert care that our staff provides. Our complete range of heart services include the very latest services available, from diagnostic testing to treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The Cardiovascular Network is committed to teaching the next generation of cardiologists. Since the early 1980's, member hospitals have trained Cardiovascular Fellows in Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, and Echocardiography. We use the most sophisticated imaging, diagnostic and cardiac pacing equipment. Currently, the fellowship programs enroll 27 fellows in intensive 3- to 4-year programs and participating hospitals are among the top 100 Teaching Heart Hospitals in America and among the top 30 Teaching Hospitals overall in the nation. St. John Health-educated physicians are now prominent cardiologists practicing across the country.

The Cardiovascular Network is active in clinical and basic cardiovascular research. Member hospitals are actively engaged in every aspect of clinical cardiovascular research through their partnerships with major academic institutions, pharmaceutical and device companies. Because of this commitment to clinical research, our patients have access to the very latest therapies, devices and interventional techniques, often before these new innovations are released to non-academic cardiac centers. Basic cardiovascular research spans the continuum from detecting subtle differences at the molecular level to physiologic changes at the organismal level.

Since 2005, SJH-CV Network members have published or collaborated on over 80 scholarly articles appearing in respected peer-reviewed journals and covering the entire spectrum of invasive and non-invasive cardiology. Current areas of interest include advances in:

  • percutaneous cardiac intervention
  • carotid and peripheral vascular interventions
  • device therapy for congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias
  • non-invasive diagnostic assessment of coronary and valvular heart disease
  • carotid artery disease.

These findings have been presented by our fellows and faculty at both national and international meetings.

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for men and women in the state of Michigan. As members of the St. John Health Cardiovascular Network, we are proud to lead the battle against this disease at Providence Hospital, St. John Hospital and Medical Center and St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital.
