Objectives:
To become familiar with clinical evaluation of patients with infections relative to diagnosis, cost-effective antibiotic therapy, applied medical microbiology, basic immunology and pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial agents. To become acquainted with laboratory studies pertaining to the Infectious Disease patient, i.e., clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies and radiologic studies of x-rays, scans and echograms. To compile data and do basic research on a given clinical study. To observe and participate in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with Infectious Disease patients. To observe in Medical Microbiology Lab in Pathology Department to learn basic bench microbiology from the medical microbiologist. To encourage journal and textbook reading.
Description:
The Infectious Disease rotation at Providence Hospital is a consultative service under the direction of a full-time faculty member. The above educational objectives can be achieved by 1) following and performing the Infectious Disease consultation on a small number of patients and orally presenting the history, physical findings, and impressions to the Coordinator; 2) participating in formal Infectious Disease teaching rounds (four times per week) and daily rounds with the Coordinator; 3) reviewing laboratory and radiology studies pertaining to Infectious Disease patients, such as clinical microbiology, serum chemistries, immunological studies, and radiologic studies that include x-rays, scans and echograms; 4) observing in Medical Microbiology Laboratory in the Pathology Department to learn basic bench microbiology from the medical microbiologist; 5) observing and participating in invasive and diagnostic procedures associated with Infectious Disease patients; 6) taking part in basic research on a selected clinical study; 7) attending Infectious Disease Conference on the second Wednesday of each month; and 8) completing assigned Infectious Disease reading.
