PH GME Medical Student Senior Electives - Endocrinology

Senior Elective: Endocrinology

Duration: One month

Candidates: Senior students of approved medical schools

Evaluation: Oral

Description:
The rotation is designed to acquaint the fourth-year medical student with endocrinological abnormalities that are commonly seen by the practicing internist.  The internist through a detailed history and physical examination frequently discovers endocrinological problems inclusive of diabetes mellitus, thyroid dysfunction and lipid abnormalities.  In the course of the rotation, there will also be exposure to patients with less common endocrine diseases including pituitary, adrenal, and parathyroid disease.

The rotation is in the setting of a practicing endocrinologist.  The student works under the direct supervision of the endocrinologist and has responsibility based upon his or her individual skills. Patients will be seen, both in the clinic and on consultation rounds in the hospital. He/she is expected to participate in the care of the patient as guided by the attending physician.

The student will gain knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system. The student will also learn about pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, parathyroid disease, adrenal, and other endocrine symptoms.

Workweek: 5 days/week; 8 hours/day; no call

Required Conferences:
- Medicine Morning Report:  7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
- Medical Grand Rounds:  8:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m., every Thursday
- Diabetic Teaching Rounds:  8:30-9:00 a.m. Tuesdays, 7:30 -8:00 a.m. on Thursdays.
