Senior Elective: Coronary Care Unit

Description:
The Coronary Care Unit handles over 1,000 patients annually and provides an opportunity to participate in the care of acute cardiac emergencies. The student participates in temporary pacemaker insertions and invasive hemodynamic monitoring. All non-invasive cardiac diagnostic studies including exercise testing, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, systolic time intervals are being used routinely. The student has the opportunity to participate in these activities as well as work closely with the residents and fellows assigned to cardiology.
Students also attend weekly cardiology lectures including EKG interpretation lectures for students, fellow-led lectures for all rotating residents and students, echocardiography conferences, catheterization conferences, and cardiology grand rounds.
Workweek: 5 days/week; 8 hours/day; 5 calls per month
