Description:
The Senior Elective Program in Cardiology at Providence Hospital introduces the students primarily to clinical cardiology. A large patient population demonstrating all aspects of valvular, ischemic, hypertensive and congenital heart disease is utilized to instruct the student in the skills of clinical assessment and physical diagnosis. A busy cardiac catheterization laboratory provides the opportunity to observe left and right heart catheterization and angiography.
Students will spend a balanced amount of time between seeing patients on consultation with the staff cardiologists and seeing patients in the cardiology fellows’ clinic. They will have the opportunity to see patients first and develop their assessment skills. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of noninvasive cardiology testing, including ECG interpretation, echocardiography, electrophysiology lab, and stress testing.
Students also attend weekly cardiology lectures including EKG interpretation lectures for students, fellow-led lectures for all rotating residents and students, echocardiography conferences, catheterization conferences, and cardiology grand rounds.
