Program Requirements

All residents required to take 6 months of General Internal Medicine rotation (may include CCU and Oncology). Any exceptions to this policy must be pre-approved by the Program Director to ensure appropriate rotation scheduling, evaluation and counseling of the resident

All residents required to do one month of ER

All candidates required to have the equivalent of 1 month of ambulatory care

Residents may elect to spend up to 4 months in a Participating Department other than Internal Medicine

Residents not electing 4 months in a Participating Department other than Internal Medicine may choose 2 months of electives from an approved list on an availability basis (see below). An additional 2 months of rotations will be assigned

All residents will have call time approximately equal to but not greater than first year categorical Internal Medicine residents while on Internal Medicine or Medicine elective rotations. In no case will the on-call schedule average out to more than every fourth night
There will be a written agreement signed by the resident, Transitional Year Program Director and Sponsoring Department Program Director delineating the tentative curriculum.

* = IM-FCS rotations include medicine teams, hematology/oncology, CCU, etc.
** = Only one of these is required when the rotation is family practice and it is an ambulatory rotation. Otherwise, both are required
Note: In addition to the requirements below, all MDs pursuing a categorical residency other than internal medicine will rotate:
• 2 additional months (CCU, hematology/oncology, or IM)
• 3 additional month of electives

Elective rotations are determined by the needs of the individual resident and the training requirements of the area of future specialty. Information and counseling on prerequisites for entrance to categorical residency programs are made available to Transitional Year residents through the department of Medical Education.

All education opportunities, quality of patient care, and academic performance of Transitional year residents are equal for all PGY I residents at Providence Hospital.
