PH GME Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Overview

St. John Providence   is part of a 5 hospital network of Ob.Gyn providers in Southeast Michigan.  The parent organization is Ascension Health.

Active Obstetrical Service    St. John Providence Hospital is located at the sociodemographic center of Southeast Michigan.  The diverse population provides a wide variety of clinical obstetrical experiences with high acuity patients.  On average, graduating chief residents have experienced 300 spontaneous births, 42 operative vaginal births, 297 Cesarean births, 16 multifetal births, and 20 amniocentesis.

Large Volume and Variety    Providence Ob/Gyn residents graduate as highly qualified gynecologic surgeons.  The Ob/Gyn Department has its own urogynecology program and one of the busiest gynecologic oncology programs in the area.  On average, graduating chiefs experience 139 abdominal hysterectomies, 32 vaginal hysterectomies, 86 other laparotomies, 125 urinary incontinence or reconstructive pelvic procedures, 76 laparoscopic surgeries, 95 hysteroscopies, and a variety of others.

Superb Facilities    The Ob/Gyn Department is integrated into a Women’s Healthcare Network.  Facilities for obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic urology, and oncology are located in different wings on the same hospital floor.  Department administrative offices  (both medical and nursing) and educational facilities reside within this academic/clinical environment.

Twenty-Four Hour In-House Faculty    Ob/Gyn In-House Faculty provide the regional model for on-sight resident support, supervision, and clinical coverage.  They are intricately involved in the didactic and clinical resident and medical student academic programs.  The department has robust support from hospital-based faculty – Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, and Reproductive Endocrinology subspecialties, in addition to excellent ancillary
hospital services.

Goals and Objectives of Ob/Gyn Resident Program

1.  To educate and train resident physicians to be the optimal healthcare provider for women.
2.  To provide a comprehensive specialty and subspecialty education that allows the resident to
become an effective consultant to their medical colleagues.
3.  To promote education that enables residents to serve as primary care physicians for women
     throughout their lifespan.
4.  To foster commitment to professionalism and camaraderie among residents and attending
physicians, faculty, program director, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
5.  To encourage professional, ethical and leadership growth for residents that will be maintained
     throughout their professional careers.
6.  To qualify residents to become board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and
Gynecology and Fellows in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
7.  To promote a willingness to teach faculty, colleagues, and medical students and develop a
     strong life-long learning commitment.

Resident Selection Criteria
Candidates are selected based on a wide range of criteria.  Strength of USMLE scores, letters of recommendation and academic background are key priorities, as well as the interview process, which provides valuable information for the program.  Final selection considers faculty and resident input.  All candidates are selected through the Match (NRMP).

Applicants will be invited to interview after reviewing the strength of their credentials.  A personal interview is required before further consideration for the program.  Out-of-town applicants may be lodged by one of our faculty or residents to lower the cost of their visit.  Interviews are conducted from mid November until late January

Application and Related Information
The program requires the following of its applicants:
1.
A completed ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) application, including personal statement.
2.
Three ERAS-transmitted letters of recommendation. A letter from the Chairman of your school’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is desirable, but not absolutely necessary.  You should encourage the writer to send his/her letter as soon as possible after you submit your application.
3.  Dean’s letter.
4.
Medical school transcript.
5.
A transcript of your USMLE Step 1 and, if available, Step 2 scores.

Program Accreditation and Certification
The Providence Hospital obstetrics and gynecology residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to offer four years of training in obstetrics and gynecology.

Research
All Ob/Gyn residents must complete a research project prior to graduation.  Analytic studies utilizing database or original observations are encouraged.  Exceptional reviews and case reports are considered toward the requirement.  All residents are expected to present their research in oral or poster form at the Providence Hospital Resident and Fellows Research Day and at the Michigan Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Research Day.  Research projects must be approved by the Program Director and hospital institutional review board prior to initiation.  Research projects are mentored by department and hospital faculty.

Providence Hospital is unique among community programs in maintaining a full Research Department.  This Department is staffed by a Ph.D. Director and certified medical technicians.  Funding is provided through the Hospital Foundation.

Providence Ob/Gyn residents have previously achieved one of the top three awards in hospital and statewide academic competitions.

Faculty
The greatest strength of the training program is a unique blend of university and community hospital trained faculty.  Many of the 65 attending physicians in the department participate in the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologist’s annual voluntary recertification examination (VRE).  The faculty utilizes the adult learning-teaching model in resident and medical student education.  Clinical activities are enhanced by ongoing feedback in a mutually beneficial academic environment.

Specialty and subspecialty faculty are appropriately board certified to provide educational experience in:
- Maternal-Fetal Medicine, including Reproductive Genetics

- Fetal Imaging, Obstetrical and Gynecological Sonography
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
- Gynecological Oncology
- Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery
- Ambulatory Ob/Gyn, Primary and Geriatric Care

Of special note, off-site rotations focused on Reproductive Endocrinology and Laparoscopic Surgery are also offered through an interactive agreement with Wayne State University.  Conversely, Ob/Gyn residents from WSU and other regional programs often rotate through our services to gain additional training and experience.

The faculty is exceptionally pleased with its training program and accomplishments.  Over the past decade, the majority of eligible program graduates have become fully certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Faculty members are often invited lecturers at local and national forums and participate in specialty specific societies.  This also includes guiding care across the 5 St. John Health Ob/Gyn Hospitals and 43 Ascension Health Ob Hospitals.
