PH GME Family Medicine Residency Program Details

Program Features

Providence Hospital sponsors 17 residency and fellowship programs with more than 146 total house staff. The Hospital has participated in graduate medical education since 1903.

Resident Selection Criteria
Candidate selection is made by a combined faculty-resident committee on the basis of achievement in undergraduate and medical school, and a personal interview, which is required.

Other requirements:  Scores of 80 or greater on USMLE Steps 1 and 2, US or Canadian clinical experience in a LCGME approved hospital, graduation from medical school within the last five years, three letters of recommendation, US citizenship or a green card (we do not sponsor ANY visas, ECFMG sponsored J-1 visas are accepted).  Interviews are generally scheduled from November through the end of January.  All applications to the program must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  Candidates are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).  IMGs must provide proof of ECFMG certification to the NRMP prior to its February deadline to be included in the MATCH. 

Program Accreditation& Certification
The Providence Hospital family medicine residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to offer three years of training in family medicine. American Board of Family Practice Certification:  Since 1976, the Providence Hospital family medicine program has graduated 160+ residents. The pass rate on the Boards has been 100 percent.

Research
All residents are encouraged to participate in research and are required to complete at least one research project prior to graduation. Laboratory and computer research facilities are available at Providence Hospital. Funding for resident research is provided through the Providence Hospital Foundation. The Annual Resident Research Day at Providence Hospital, the Oakland Health Education Program Research forum and other local and regional forums are available for presentation of research results. Research workshops are conducted annually to assist residents with formulating, conducting and reporting research projects.

Affiliations
The Providence Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is affiliated with the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and the Southeastern Michigan Center for Medical Education (SEMCME), an educational consortium of teaching hospitals in southeastern Michigan. Junior and senior medical students from Wayne State train at Providence Hospital. Providence also has a limited affiliation with the University of Michigan Medical School, and we have junior and senior students from U of M on the Family Practice Service.

Faculty
In addition to the full time Chairperson of the Department and the Program Director, there are 13 Board-Certified Family Physicians on the faculty. The practices also have midlevel providers. In the Family Medicine Centers, the teaching ratio is 2-3 residents per faculty preceptor.

Faculty Advisor
A Faculty Advisor is assigned to each Resident to act as a mentor with respect to patient management, academic matters, interpersonal considerations and other matters of importance to the resident.

Resident Forum
Providence Hospital Family Medicine Residents meet weekly to discuss subjects of mutual interest and for governance. Two Administrative Chief Residents are elected every six months and act as the liaison with the faculty and staff.

Moonlighting
After completion of the second year, residents are allowed to work up to 16 hours per week in a position that is approved by the Program Director. A permanent license is required.
