PH GME Integrated Programs - Plastic Surgery Program Details

The residents of this program rotate between Providence Hospital and St. John Hospital (Detroit, Michigan) and cover two busy emergency rooms. A fully equipped microvascular laboratory, research laboratory, two ambulatory surgical facilities and private offices all serve as integral parts in the training of the plastic surgery residents. The strengths of the program include:
Large volume and wide variety of surgical cases.

Resident Selection Criteria
Each candidate must have their prerequisite training approved by the American Board of Plastic Surgery prior to the application process in order to be eligible for a position in the program. Candidates are selected through the Plastic Surgery Match by the Plastic Surgery Education Committee composed of the members of the program faculty. Residents are selected based on achievement in medical school, residency training, research experience, letters of recommendation, in-service scores and a personal interview.

There are two positions available each year. All candidates are selected through the San Francisco Matching Program (www.sfmatch.org) and applications are verified through the Maricopa County Plastic Surgery Central Application Service (phone: (602) 258-7722, fax: (602) 254-4168)

Program Accreditation
The Providence Hospital Plastic Surgery Program is currently on probation, the next site visit is to be determined.

Research
Research in plastic and reconstructive surgery is viewed as an integral part of the curriculum of this program. Each resident is encouraged to complete a research project prior to graduation from the program, Residents are also expected to participate in clinical investigations with the faculty. Research projects are supervised by the chairperson of the program and performed with the guidance of a full-time research fellow. Residents are required to present their research findings at the Providence Hospital Research Day forum, encouraged to present at regional, national and international meetings and to produce a significant number of publications.

Resident Assessment
Each year all residents are required to take the plastic surgery in-service examination. In addition, a mock oral exam is given by the staff, outside examiners and the Kapetansky Visiting Professor. These exams are patterned after the Plastic Surgery Boards and are used to prepare the resident for this exam.

Faculty
The eight members of the plastic surgery faculty possess a significant experience and expertise in many different areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The fields of hand and microvascular surgery, cleft and craniofacial surgery, burns and breast reconstruction are represented by the fellowship trained staff. In addition to the full-time staff, a craniofacial fellow, a research fellow as well as numerous long- and short- term visitors from around the world.

Points of Interest - The Plastic Surgery Department houses the editorial office of the European Journal of Plastic Surgery. PHMC is also proud of our large, active research laboratory and microsurgical training center.
