Description:
The Section of Orthopedics is in an excellent position to present to the senior students a comprehensive outline of the spectrum of orthopedic surgery as practiced in a community hospital. There is a large volume of elective orthopedic surgery done at Providence Hospital as well as a very active Emergency Department presenting a variety of orthopedic trauma.

Daily Activities and Responsibilities for Medical Students:

A. Duties to Expect
- Daily rounds starting at 6:30 a.m.
- OR case coverage – 1st assist duties
- ER/floor consults – if OR is covered, check with floor mid-level for assistance
- ER/floor new admissions - if OR is covered check with floor mid-level
- Post-op checks for every case scrubbed
- Floor procedures – assistance with fracture reduction and casting, joint aspirations/injections
- Sign out at the end of the day with the floor mid-level staff
B. Orthopedic Conferences
- Student/Resident Interesting Cases (1st Thurs. of the month) – Present one case during the rotation – preferably a case the student scrubbed.
- Attend all ortho conferences during the rotation cycle – every Thurs. at 7:30 a.m.
