Providence is the only hospital in southeast Michigan to receive this recognition six years in a row and the only center in Oakland County to be honored in 2006.

Specialties

Behavioral Medicine Services – Providence’s Behavioral Medicine program includes inpatient care, a partial day hospital program, substance abuse treatment and outpatient care at several locations.  With our partner, Brighton Hospital, we offer our clients the full scope of mental health and addiction services.

Cardiovascular Services – The Providence Heart Institute is a national leader in heart care.  Amenities include: all cardiovascular services together in one location, private consultation rooms, education center equipped with touch-screen technology, large cardiac rehab gym, specially equipped area for implanting pacemakers and internal defibrillators, dedicated unit for patients requiring continuous heart monitoring pre- or post-surgery or those admitted for observation, dedicated area for nuclear cardiology and cardiology specialty clinics.  For the fifth consecutive year, Providence Hospital is ranked as one of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the United Sates, according to an independent national study by Solucient. We also have been designated a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan Cardiac Center of Excellence since 1996.  Providence is a member of the St. John Health Heart Care Network, the leading provider of heart care in Michigan.

Neurosciences – Providence recently received Primary Stroke Center certification from JCAHO, which demonstrates that we are committed to providing the highest standard of care for stroke patients and their families.  This care is supported by evidence-based medicine and national guidelines set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association. Providence has created a holistic environment to meet the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of our patients, with a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the consistent evaluation and improvement of patient care outcomes across inpatient and outpatient stroke care delivery.  We have the following in place: Acute Stroke Team, clinical practice guidelines, laboratory and neuroimaging services, EMS contract, Stroke Unit, neurosurgical services available 24/7 and a Stroke Center Director. Providence also recently achieved Top 50 status in the US News and World Report's “America’s Best Hospitals” list in the area of Neurology & Neurosurgery.

Oncology/Cancer Center – Providence offers a full range of cancer care services, from outpatient radiation and medical oncology to inpatient and hospice care.  We are a leader in clinical research, focusing on treatments that can bring immediate benefits to the patient.  Providence also offers a wide range of support services for cancer patients, including pain control, nutrition counseling, social work, pastoral care support groups and a cancer information library. The Providence Cancer Institute includes the Southfield Cancer Center and the Michael and Rose Assarian Cancer Center, which offers a myriad of Healing Arts services, addressing the needs of the mind and spirit, as well as the body. Both centers are members of the St. John Cancer Care Network.

Orthopedics – Providence provides a full range of orthopedic services, including general orthopedics; total joint replacement program; surgery for the shoulder, foot, ankle, hand; sports injuries, fracture care, and arthroscopic surgery. The hospital recently received Joint Replacement certification from JCAHO, which means that Providence has examined our quality, identified variables that demonstrate quality and constantly strives to improve that quality.  We have a multidisciplinary team in place to address the patient’s needs, from education to treatment to discharge planning to rehabilitation to quality assurance.

Surgery –  Surgeons performed more than 26,000 general and specialty inpatient and outpatient surgeries in Providence facilities in FY06.  Providence is home to the Craniofacial Institute, known the world over for clinical excellence, exceptional outcomes and its charitable care to children with facial deformities. Providence performed almost 300 open-heart surgeries in the past year. The Michigan Ear Institute is located at Providence. It is one of the nation’s leading groups specializing in treating hearing loss, ear infections, dizziness, facial palsy and acoustic tumors.  Providence surgeons participate in innovative surgery, such as implanting the only FDA-approved brain stent, minimally invasive surgery for liver tumors and using Optimesh in spinal fusion surgery.

Women’s/Pediatric Services – Providence offers a comprehensive range of health care and health education services for women from adolescence and childbearing to midlife and senior years. Providence has brought more than 250,000 new lives into the world.  We offer both a New Life Center with Labor-Delivery-Recovery rooms for traditional and high-risk births, and an Alternative Birth Care Unit for mothers at low-risk who desire the birth experience to be natural—not routinely requiring medical intervention—and one that respects privacy while encouraging family involvement.  We have a 15-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where neonatologists and highly educated nurses provide specialized attention to the tiniest and most fragile infants born at Providence.  Obstetrics is just part of the women’s health picture at Providence.  Our practitioners provide routine gynecologic care and treatment in all areas of women’s health, with special emphasis on menopause, osteoporosis and breast health.  The Providence Children’s Unit (PCU) is a dedicated wing with seven inpatient and four short-stay beds.

Graduate Medical Education

Throughout a history that dates back to 1845, the Providence name has become synonymous with first-rate medicine and compassionate care. Providence has approximately 150 residents in 19 residency programs, including seven subspecialty programs. We support our program through full-time faculty dedicated to learning, favorable faculty-to-resident ratios, high volume and variety of pathologies, excellent medical library and a large and varied research program.
