St. John Hospital and Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ for stroke care. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded SJH&MC Primary Stroke Center Certification.

This designation reconfirms the hospital’s dedication to providing the very best in state-of-the-art diagnostic testing capabilities and therapeutic interventions to patients who present with stroke-like symptoms.

“Our commitment to delivering the highest quality patient care using the most advanced technologies has made St John Hospital and Medical Center a destination institution for stroke patients in Michigan and throughout the Midwest”, says Diane Radloff, president of SJH&MC.

The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's statements/guidelines for stroke care. The Joint Commission launched the program - the nation's first - in 2003. A list of Joint Commission-certified programs is available at www.jcaho.org.

Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation's third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke ever 45 second and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

St. John Hospital and Medical Center’s Neurosciences department offers comprehensive, advanced diagnosis and treatment for the brain, spine and nervous system. SJH&MC is a member of St. John Health System, the largest provider of inpatient care in southeast Michigan. St. John Health provides comprehensive prevention, primary care and advanced treatment programs with more than 125 medical centers, and seven hospitals spanning five counties.
