The St. John Providence Health System Chronic Headache and Migraine Institute is committed to providing comprehensive, coordinated care that focuses on the individual. We believe in a multi-disciplinary approach including traditional medicine and complementary techniques to make a positive difference in the quality of life of those with head pain.

We are dedicated to serving those with chronic headache and migraine by enhancing their physical, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being.

What you can expect

All patients of the St. John Providence Health System Chronic Headache and Migraine Institute receive a comprehensive evaluation by our neurologist on their initial visit to provide an accurate diagnosis as well as an individualized treatment plan.

As part of our comprehensive program, you may be referred to other Institute professionals including a pain psychologist, nurse, dietitan, and physical therapist. All care is coordinated through your primary care physician.

What your treatment plan may include:

After completing your medical testing, patients have access to a wide array of techniques designed to help them prevent headaches, and to lessen the pain when they occur. Those techniques can include:

Our Multidisciplinary team

At the Chronic Head and Migraine Institute, our team has a lead neurologist to manage your care, but an entire team of professionals also provide valuable services to give you comprehensive care. That may include a:
  • Pain psychologist
  • Physical therapist
  • Pharmacist
  • Addiction medicine specialist
  • Interventional anesthesiologist
  • Psychiatrist

Biofeedback

Successful control of chronic headaches or migraines includes you! People who actively engage in behavioral strategies such as daily relaxation, distraction, meditation, biofeedback, positive self-talk and hypnosis to manage pain demonstrate significant improvements in quality of life.

Specifically, these patients are more likely to be active in their daily activities, have improved mood, rely less on medication and experience decreased pain intensity or pain frequency. So take charge and use the power within yourself to help yourself. If you are interested in learning more about behavioral pain management, pleasecontact Kimberly Bialik, PhD, at 248-967-7988 for an initial appointment.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a treatment technique used by either physical therapists or a physician with extensive training. A typical craniosacral treatment session involves the practitioner placing their hands on the patient and "re-setting" the patients craniosacral rhythm. Craniosacral therapy is a gentle treatment approach, which works the spine, skull and cranial sutures, relieving restrictions of nerve passageways, optimizing movement of the spinal cord and nerves, and ultimately promoting improved function. Mal-aligned bones can also be restored to their proper position by this treatment method.
