Lap band surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which a silicon band is placed around a part of the stomach to make it smaller.

Dr. Abdelkader Hawasli,  Director of Laparoscopic Surgery and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, has performed the Lap Band procedure on 25 patients and predicts in five years it will become the standard treatment for morbid obesity, instead of gastric bypass surgery.

Lap band is especially promising because it has the potential to positively affect the health of a patient for years to come. By losing the weight, the morbidly obese patient is less likely to develop diabetes, a cardiac condition, or need knee replacement surgery.
