Opportunities in Cardiology
The St. John Health Cardiovascular Research Network relies on research and training environments to facilitate and enhance our academic mission.
Microsurgery: A certified microsurgical instructor provides training in vessel anastomosis and helps develop research protocols involving mircrosurgical techniques and perfusion.
Basic Research: Basic cardiovascular research is carried out at the Center for Heart and Vessel Preclinical Studies at St. John Hospital and Medical Center. The laboratory is equipped to carry out cell culture, oxygen deprivation/reoxygenation studies, electrophoresis, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunostaining and image analysis of cultured heart cells. At Providence, research personnel assist in conducting investigations in cell and molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, histology, and other areas.
Anatomic Dissection Laboratory: To conduct anatomical studies relating to Cardiology and partner with outside organizations for training and research, an anatomic dissection laboratory was developed. In addition, specialty-specific anatomy labs are conducted in collaboration with anatomists from the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Surgical and Procedural Skills Laboratory: A simulation training laboratory has been established to prepare residents, fellows and staff to become skilled in new or previously unfamiliar procedures that they will use to provide patient care.
Biomedical Research Laboratory: Licensed veterinary technicians assist investigators with a variety of animal-related studies. The facility contains a complete operating suite, procedures room, post-operative recovery room and animal housing to accommodate those projects using animals to model human disease states.
