RESIDENTS ROLE & FUNCTION IN HOSPITAL-CLINICAL TRAINING
Internship Year (OGME 1): Consists of rotations in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Rotations performed will be determined based on the resident’s previous experience and perceived strengths and deficiencies to give the resident a well-rounded background for entering the last five (5) years of neurosurgery training.
First Year (OGME 2): The first year resident will be expected to complete nine (9) months of Neurological Surgery and three (3) months of Neuro-critical care medicine as assigned and approved by the Program Director. Requirements may vary if the candidate did not complete the PHMC Surgically Directed Internship year.
Second Year (OGME 3): This year includes a Pediatric Neurosurgery rotation at Children's Hospital of MI, Neuroradiology, Neuro-Otology/Skull Base Surgery, Pain Management in addition to a rotation at Providence in Neurosurgery. Decisions for patient management are discussed with the chief resident and monitored daily by the senior staff. The resident performs simple procedures under direct supervision, assists in major surgical procedures, and performs some surgical procedures of intermediate complexity under faculty supervision.
Third Year (OGME 4): Rotations through Neurology and Neuropathology provide the residents with limited independent activity. An additional 6 months of Neurosurgery at Providence Hospital as well. The resident is encouraged to pursue an area of research in either clinical or basic neuroscience. Residents are allowed to perform procedures based on their demonstrated abilities.
Senior Year (OGME 5): The resident is the chief resident at Sinai-Grace Hospital for Neurosurgery/Neurotrauma. The senior resident is given a major role in the direct management and supervision of the junior residents working with him/her. Direct supervision is maintained by the faculty for most decisions, and the resident performs most surgical procedures, with direct assistance by one of the faculty.
Chief Resident (OGME 6): The chief resident has direct responsibility for the management of the service and supervision of the junior residents. The resident is in charge of making therapeutic and diagnostic decisions for inpatients, and performs the majority of the surgical procedures. The chief resident is responsible for the administrative management of the junior residents, coordinates the call schedule, and the vacation schedules for the residents. The chief resident attends the departmental faculty meetings, may participate in the departmental decisions, and serves as a liaison for the residents and faculty.
Scholarly Activity
The resident shall prepare an annual scientific paper, due thirty (30) days after the completion of each contract year, upon a subject mutually acceptable to the resident and to the Program Director, or scientific display for the ACOS annual clinical assembly. The Program director/site coordinator may assign additional topics or subjects for consideration in preparation by the resident if and when it is deemed necessary to do so to enhance the quality of the resident’s training program.
