Summary: Right now, stroke ranks as the No. 3 cause of death in the United States, just behind heart disease and cancer. In 2004, that meant stroke accounted for one of every 16 deaths. The good news is that the death rate for stroke has been steadily declining since 1999; the bad news is that the risk factors that are under our control (modifiable) are still too high and, in some cases, rising.
