Hospice Stories

" I never thought I'd see, meet and talk with angels. (If I go way up "there," it's usual to have angels around...but here on earth?) Opportunity and good luck must go hand-in-hand! When illness brought hospice it also meant angels to my home to assist. But they came by car - not wings - but their demeanor, efforts and intentions were heaven sent. Though fate ruled the situation, his (patient's) hospice aides made Morris' last weeks livable. Thank you so much to each and every one for the smiles and pleasantries, besides the good medical help. "

" I was very pleased with the excellent care given to my husband by the hospice team. Each time when they would finish attending to my husband he loved to shake their hands & say thank you. What can I say but as I told each care giver I love you & very appreciative for what you are doing. It made me feel so good to see Cecil & Beverly at the funeral.God bless All of you & Love you. "

" Dad was ready to die. But I know he didn’t like hospitals. He didn’t like nursing homes. Hospice allowed us to care for dad at home. His last days were with his family. He was comfortable loved… I didn’t want to impose but unlike hospital care they were joyfully, willingly helpful. They cared for dad with respect, love, and respect, and the highest professional care. All were knowledgeable. They explained everything every step of the way. (Even the young man who brought the bed was so kind and thoughtful) "

" My Cousin May was in St. John Hospital for 10 days and was returned to St. Mary’s Nursing Home with Hospice care. Kristen was the nurse assigned to her. Both my other cousin, Geneva and I were guardians for May and met with Kristen as often as we could at the home. She always tried to let us know when she would be there in case we had questions. I would like you to know that she was the kind of person we needed to get us through the very trying time. She talked to us at great length, answered a ton of questions every time we met and offered valuable information. At the end, Kristen alerted us that, in her opinion, the time was close to the end for May and we heeded her advice. May has a brother in an assisted living facility and we made sure he saw May the whole time she was in Hospice, but definitely at the end when Kristen told us. May passed away on November 30 right after her brother and I left St. Mary’s. My husband and I picked her brother Pat up again and took him back to the nursing home where he was able to see that his sister had died. That was needed. Kristen is a caring person who is very good at what she does. We knew she cared about May by the way she examined her and spoke to her and I just wanted you to know that the family is very appreciative of this wonderful person you have on staff. Thank you. "

" I have told everyone what a wonderful organization Hospice is. I have nothing but praise for all the people who helped my husband. I told our nurse one day that Hospice must have a connection with Heaven and that’s where they get their help. Every single person that saw my husband was pleasant, concerned, helpful. We feel very fortunate to have this service during his illness. Bless Hospice at St. John. "

" Needless to say we were apprehensive to have strangers come into my Mom’s home. My dad, sister and myself took care of my Mom’s every need until we were overwhelmed. At that point, we made a call to St. John Hospice and were very fortunate to have Carol and Jeanna come to our aide! With their help and guidance we were able to maintain my Mom’s privacy and dignity for a longer period of time. As my mother became weaker and weaker, Jeanna kept my mom very clean and comfortable as well as giving us many helpful tips and suggestions to maintain comfort care. Carol was very consoling to us and explained exactly what was going on. She too gave many helpful tips and great advice. She also explained to us that things would only get worse in preparation for my Mom’s death. She indeed helped walked us through this! The genuine sincerity and gracious kindness these women showed our family will never be forgotten. We thank God for people like Carol and Jeanna. They truly made our rough journey easier to bare. "

" To our new friend Some time has passed since my dear Mother died & I wanted to share some thoughts with you. First Rose, thank you for your compassion, concern, patience, and especially your support during the most difficult time of all our lives. I can't help but think of my Mother every day - almost every hour. I miss her so much. I wish you knew her when she was healthy, you would have loved her. More Importantly I want to thank you for coming on her birthday even though you weren't on call. You made everything so much easier. Honestly, I don't know what we would have done without you. Often when I think of my Mother's final days, I reflect on how peaceful she was and pain free. You truly helped us prepare for her final hours & minutes & although I wish she was still here we are at peace with the way she died. Thank you for being there! "

" Thank you very much for your kind letter in regard to my husband’s death a year ago. I also received your mailings about support groups offered in the community. I am enclosing another donation to Hospice, they have been very helpful at a very stressful time. Especially Lynnas my husband was dying. I am coping quite well and things should get easier from now on. "

" We were so very fortunate to have the best team any family would want. Jeanna- cared for my mothers’ personal needs as if it were her own. Carol/ Karen both treated my mom very special. Karen did increase her visits to the house to deal with a rash problem and we were truly grateful for that. Michelle was our Social Worker and always had a special touch that everyone felt when she left. And Glenna- thank you for being on call last weekend, you were so caring and supportive to the family. "

" It was approximately 11:00 pm one night and one of our patients was very close to dying. Deacon Bernie was contacted and immediately came to the patient’s home along with our nurse. Deacon Bernie had said a prayer and the patient passed away. After, Deacon Bernie stayed with the family to provide support that they needed. Deacon Bernie’s presence gave great comfort and support to this family. "
