Career Profiles: Registered Dietitian

What do they do?

  • Work in health care, business and industry, public health,education, research and private practice.
  • As part of the health care team, educate patients about nutrition and administer nutrition therapy.
  • Manage food service operations

  • Oversee everything from food purchasing and preparation to managing staff

Education/Training

  • College prep courses in high school, including math and science, some business courses may be helpful.
  • Bachelor’s degree in dietetics or a related field approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
  • Complete a supervised practice program, approved or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the ADA, at a health care facility, community agency or food service corporation.
  • Pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Complete continuing professional education requirements to maintain registration.

Salary

  • Averages between $25,000 and $45,000
